A "Fully-Evolved Male"?

It was Christmas 2010 that this all started.  My sister-in-law purchased a cake spinner and I was surprised, yet excited, to have received it.  Did I really just receive a cake spinner at Christmas...and am I really excited to be getting it?  Sadly, I don't think I conveyed a whole lot of enjoyment for the gift.

Tonight, as tradition, we celebrated a host of summer birthdays on one day; five of the family members have birthdays within three weeks of each other.  This year I opened up my birthday gift and found that my sister-in-law had given me a car-shaped cake pan with a Michael's gift card.  As my mother-in-law has now called me, "He's a fully-evolved male."

I don't know if I like that title, even if it serves as a compliment; however, tonight, I delivered my newest cake to the family:  The triple-layer Dark Hershey Chocolate cake.  My sister-in-law and brother-in-law hosted the birthday event and, as much as I think they appreciated the cake, they probably didn't appreciate how much milk we all wanted to wash down that sweet, delectable richness.

I'll buy them another gallon of milk soon.

This week, I have four carrot cake orders to fulfill and I'm sure more are on the way.  Thanks for following and please encourage friends to follow the Cakes for a Mustang Facebook page.  Each "Like" will earn them an extra vote over and above votes earned when buying a cake.

**Order Form Update** -->  The triple-layer Dark Hershey Chocolate cake is now available on the order form.  Also, serving amounts have been added as well to each cake.

This Isn't Your Grandma's Carrot Cake

It has been awhile since my last post.  So what has been going on?  You have been ordering.  That's what's been happening.

Things have been very busy!  To give you an idea, here's some itemization:

  • baked/sold more than a dozen cake orders, mostly carrot cake, two Hershey chocolate cakes, and an order of cupcakes
  • created a brand logo and stickers to put on each cake box
  • opened the new Facebook page for Cakes for a Mustang (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cakes-for-a-Mustang/176888625711079)
  • opened #Cakes4aMustang twitter account (following #Ford and #FordMustang)

Needless to say, things have been bih-hiz-zee!  (Side note: I've been asked to lead the outdoor worship service at Sunshine Community Church this Sunday, July 31.)  I'm quite overwhelmed.

But don't let that deter you from ordering.  -->  CLICK HERE

The favorite cake is the carrot cake and probably what keeps people from ordering it - not that there is an issue with orders - is some people fear this is their grandma's carrot cake.  They expect it'll have lots of raisins and nuts, fearing it'll taste more of fruit and veggies than cake.  Well, let me tell you:  This isn't your grandma's carrot cake.  I like raisins (on oatmeal), but there are no raisins in this cake.  I love nuts, but only walnuts are used as a garnish (and they can be omitted if noted in "special instructions" on the form).

My greatest joy came during the biggest rush of cake orders last week when my littlest sister was in town finishing up her month-long visit.  She helped me in so many ways, keeping the cakes cool by helping me transfer them between counter to refrigerator to freezer.  But most of all, we got to connect in ways we've never had the opportunity to do in the past; she's 18 years younger than I.

I'm very excited and so thankful for the support I've already received and more thankful of what might be coming!

We have an ORDER FORM!

Many people have asked, "Hey, how can I order a cake?"  Well, congratulations are in order because Cakes for a Mustang now has an online order form [cue Luke pats self on back].

Click below:
(preview only)

Simply click on the ORDER FORM and enter your name, address, phone number, email, along with which cake or cakes you want.  You will also be prompted to select a date to pick up your cake.  This will allow me to make sure your cake is made as fresh as possible before pick up.  Please allow 48 hours from time of order to pick up.  After filling in all required info and clicking on "send email", you should receive a message saying "Thank you! Your order is being processed."  That's it.  Within 24 hours, I will personally send you a confirmation that your order has been placed.

Some of you have also asked, "Luke, do you make any other cakes than just carrot cake?"

I sure do.  I know some people don't like carrot cake.  To be honest, I was never really of fan of them myself growing up.  However, this one takes the cake, pardon the pun.  So, do try it before ruling it out completely.  But, to keep things simple at first, I am making three cakes available at the start: carrot cake, chocolate, and my specialty Oreo ice cream.  More cakes will become available as time goes on.

As always, feel free to email me your questions or suggestions to youcanreachluke@yahoo.com.  However, please use the ORDER FORM to place your cake order.

Thanks again for the amazing support!  Vroom, vroom!

Have your cake and eat it too!

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be as fun for those who purchased and ate the cake as it is for me to look forward to baking the cake.  I must admit that I love making people smile, especially when it comes to food.  Currently I basket-weave the frosting on my carrot cake.  I could easily make smooth walls on the cake; it would make things easier for me.  But I don't want to.  I like it just as much when people react to the look of the cake as when they eat it.

But I have to be frank with myself.  It's going to take a lot of cakes to get to the goal.  And I fear that people will get tired of buying, tired of following, tired of hearing this.  I'm depending on you to make this possible and not losing hope on me.

This is why I'm giving you a voice in which Mustang I get.  For every cake you purchase, you earn yourself a vote in the Mustang I buy.  I suppose it's kind of like having your cake and eating it too.  So, to keep the momentum rolling, I plan to put out bonuses...starting with Follow my blog and receive 2 bonus votes.  Yep, no strings attached.  Just follow it and you'll get 2 votes.

Thanks again for your support and...Drivers...start your appetites!

What Support!

The blog was up for one day and what amazing support I received.  I keep saying to myself this really could happen.  The two cakes I brought in for the "Grand Opening" of Cakes for a Mustang were sold by noon.  One of my closest co-workers purchased the cake and shared it with her team.  They all huddled together Ooohing and Ahhhhing like it was a new baby with its mother.  "It's so cute!"  Typically, those words coupled with that ever-so-sweet tone are not coveted by us male variety.  Nonetheless, I think I received the compliments well.  The other was purchased for a husband's birthday occurring tomorrow.

Within three hours of the blog being up, the site received over 100 page views.  Wow!  Thank you!  I know I shared it with about a dozen people and a few more, but the credit is due to those who believe in the "cause" and shared it with their closest of friends and co-workers.  For that I don't know how to share my appreciation.

Many have inquired if I'll make cupcakes and if I can do weddings.  The answer is probably yes to cupcakes; wedding cakes, well, let's just say not the big ones.  I'm not that good...yet.  However, someone mentioned to me if I could make many mini-cakes, similar to the carrot cake size, that could be made for each individual table. Huh.  Sure, I could do that.  Others have also asked if I will be making any other flavors.  Definitely.  I plan to keep it simple for you.  Double-layer cakes (carrot, chocolate, etc.) will be $10.  Specialty cakes and other sizes are subject to the specific cake, like my Oreo Ice Cream cake.  Now that's a big cake.  It can feed twenty people easy.

For now, I am focused on the 4 pre-orders for this Thursday and also bringing in 4 more on "Cake Day" (a.k.a. "Cake Fridays").

Thank you so much for your support!  Feel free to comment on this page with any suggestions or questions.

What is "Cakes for a Mustang"?

I was 16 years old when my dad and I were thinking about getting my first car.  Even though he only mentioned it once, maybe twice, I remember it well.

"Wouldn't it be fun to find a '65 Mustang and restore it?"

When we'd drive around, sometimes I'd spot the old breed, but he would always correct me on the year.  "Isn't that a '65?"  "No, son.  That's a '67.  You see..." and he would begin explaining how he could tell the difference between the years.  A slight difference in the trim or the way the rear window fell back to the tail of the car, he knew it well.

We never bought nor restored a Mustang.  I kind of let it go.  Well, maybe not quite.  Even though my first car was a boat with two La-Z-Boys and love seat in the back ('81 Bonneville Brougham) - and don't forget the Brougham - I imagined as if we were working on my Mustang.  As he taught me how this part worked with that part, I imagined it Ford rather than GM.

I guess I never really told my Dad this.  It makes sense when I tell him now how much I'd love to have a Mustang that he responds, "Oh, it's just a car.  Cars are never worth it."  But if he knew the dream he instilled in me, and not for my sake alone but for our sake, then he might understand.

Now, I'm telling him what the difference is in the years.  The new retro body styling that came out in 2005 has slight but minimal differences up through 2009.  However, the 2009 model marks the 45th anniversary of the Mustang, and those of that year received a special badge to acknowledge its achievement.  In 2010, the body received slightly new styling and the GT received new cold air intake, which was earlier given to Bullitt edition Mustangs, Steve McQueen's Bullitt.  But then, in 2011, a brand new breed was born.  The little pony received a new V6 engine with the power equal to that of the former GT and the fuel economy to reach 30 and above.  However, the GT...well, that's when the all new Coyote 5.0 was born.

It was just this past week that a co-worker's husband let me take my girls out in his 45th anniversary convertible.  A generous offer after telling them that I've always dreamed of taking my girls out in one and, maybe, one day out West.  The glow in my girls' eyes and their gleeful reactions were worth a thousand words.  "I have to do this again but much sooner."

Rather than just offering a most sincere "Thank you" to my co-worker and her husband, I decided to repay the kindness with one of my carrot cakes.  Sure it's kind of odd.  I've taken up baking as a hobby.  I suppose I like to eat and I like to treat.  It was destiny for me to bake.

Another co-worker told me that, rather than waiting around, I should just buy a Mustang.  I told her, along with everyone else, "not until I have the cash."  She then told me, "Well why don't you sell your cakes?  I'd buy one."

Huh, why not?

I guess this blog is my story of baking cakes while pursuing my dream to own a Mustang.

As cakes are sold - carrot cakes starting at $10 - all monies will go to the Mustang fund.  I promise all ingredients will be from scratch and if it doesn't taste right, I will do it over again.  Furthermore, for every person who invests in this Mustang, I will let you in return have a say in which Mustang I get.  Yes, hoping this takes off (I say that with a bit of fear), every cake will earn you 1 vote for the Mustang I will buy.  I will offer up 4 Mustangs when I am ready to buy but you will decide on the one I am to purchase.

Yes, this is crazy, but I'm ready.  I'm ready to treat, but, most of all, I'm ready to treat my girls to another drive.
